2009 Updates -- Weeks 1/2 Greetings from Topeka!

It’s hard to believe how quickly it’s arrived, but the 2009 legislative session is not only upon us, but fully underway! As we dial down on the second week of activities under the dome I want to keep you updated on some of the issues we’re facing and give you an idea of where things might be headed this year.

After the pageantry and formalities that come with the opening of the legislative session we have quickly gone to work in our respective committees receiving bills and setting agendas. As you may know, the legislature elected a new leadership team for the 2009-2010 legislative sessions and with that comes new committees and office assignments. I have been chosen to sit on the (fill in the blank, fill in the blank and fill in the blank) committees. I look forward to learning about these issues and as always, hope to hear your input as well.

On that note, as always, one of the real highlights of serving the district is seeing visitors from home at the Capitol. I’m always willing to arrange a tour and show you some of the construction that is still underway here in the building, as well as the progress that’s already been made. As a result of the renovations, my office has been moved across the street to the Docking State Office Building, located directly west of the Capitol building. You are still welcome to visit and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible!

I also want to briefly discuss a topic with you that will undoubtedly become the dominant issue this session—our state budget. While discussions on how to best address the dire circumstances that a national economic downturn have placed us in are just beginning, I believe it’s prudent to prepare ourselves for a difficult and sobering two years ahead. Rest assured that every attempt to minimize the impact of this economic blow will be made, but the reality of the situation is that responsible budgeting will mean difficult times and difficult decisions. I am open to suggestions on how to best approach this topic, and hope that you will partner with me in finding the right solutions not only for our district, but for all Kansans.

At the heart of my work are the concerns of our district. The House of Representatives is known as “The People’s House” for good reason. Seats in our body are frequently up for election in order for you to hold your elected representatives accountable to the needs of our families and communities. I assure you this is a challenge I do not take lightly, and will continue to work diligently to represent your interests. Please assist me in this effort by contacting me with all of your questions, concerns and thoughts on how to best accomplish these goals. I look forward to hearing from you soon!
